BRIEF

Program. Key actions

Expropriation and demolition of some surrounding buildings, to leave the castle isolated in the middle of the archaeological site in a new urban open space.

The archaeological studies focused on the excavation of underlying structures as well as on stratification analysis of the masonry, to understand the constructive interventions and alterations in the standing building structure along history. The research seems to confirm so far that the basis of the current castle was erected by Mudejar bricklayers in the second half of the 13th century.

Archaeological documentation of the almost unknown moat, proposing it to be incorporated to the urban space in the near future.

Ensure the building stability by reinforcement of main damaged structures at risk of collapse. It was also necessary to alleviate the domes from excessive weight to improve structural behaviour in case of earthquake.

The restoration works were based on the principles and technics used in the historical construction. As in the original building, the lime mortar coating protection for the walls had revealed as the best solution to preserve materials as brick, mud, stone or rammed-earth. At least until having funds enough for additional restoration works in the future, if needed.

During the early design stage for the refurbishment as a museum, the thermal balance of the building was to be considered in the design of environmental conditions for the future expositive purposes. The facilities and global technical solutions had to be implemented in a complex design program to avoid negative impacts on heritage.

Programa. Acciones fundamentales
